Tie-Dyed Socks

Supplies Needed:

Plastic Bowl or Pan
Rubber Gloves
Rubber Bands
Plastic Spoon
Non-Toxic Fabric Dye
White Socks
Old Newspaper (or any protective covering for your tabletop)

Step-by-Step Instructions

Start by covering your work space with old newspapers. In the plastic bowl, dissolve a packet of non-toxic fabric dye in hot water. Pay attention to the package directions. Add more hot water until there is enough liquid to cover up few pair of socks. Next, dampen the socks with clear warm water and bundle them up rubber bands. While wearing rubber gloves, submerge the bundled socks into the warm dye. Stir them occasionally with a plastic spoon. After about half an hour, run the socks under cool water. Keep rinsing and squeezing out the socks until the water runs clear. Finally, remove the rubber bands and straighten out the socks. Lay them flat on newspaper. They should be allowed to dry overnight.

This tye-dye recipe can also be used to dye solid colored T-shirts. Remember to wash any tye-dyed items seperately for the first few times! This is a fun activity to do as a group and the socks are usually a big hit a slumber parties, etc.
